NOTES ON WATERTRACK OPTIMISER TM

WaterTrack Rapid TM  is a simple and easy to use water balance model which is rigorous in its calculations but lumps all losses into a single figure. For a detailed breakdown of losses into seepage and evaporation in each element of the irrigation system on a daily basis, WaterTrack OptimiserTM should be used. WaterTrack OptimiserTM also allows prediction forward to optimise planted area decisions for various water availabilities and can provide assessment of infrastructure changes on water use (see www.watertrack.com.au or phone 1800 886 536).

WaterTrack Pty Ltd is committed to protecting the security of your personal information. We use a variety of security technologies and procedures to help protect your personal information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. For example, we store the personal information you provide on computer systems with limited access that are located in facilities to which access is limited. For sites to which you login, it is your responsibility to ensure the security of your password and not to reveal this information to others. When you move around a site to which you have logged in, or from one site to another that uses the same login mechanism, we verify your identity by means of an encrypted cookie placed on your machine.
RESULTS DISCLAIMER
Output of this model is based on minimal data together with an understanding of the processes of water movement on an irrigated farm. It should be used with caution and supported by other measures of water movement on the farm. WaterTrack accepts no liability under any circumstances for decisions based on this output.
MODELLING ASSUMPTIONS 
  • Data input by irrigators is accurate.
  • Crops are healthy and fully irrigated for reporting period for crop transpiration calculations.
  • The “evaporation” component of crop evapotranspiration is not calculated but lumped into Total Losses as this depends on the irrigation method used and the soil moisture status in the top layer of the soil. Calculations of evaporation require WaterTrack OptimiserTM
  • Rainfall on all areas except irrigated fields is ignored.
  • Land Surface Diversions (the new Murray Darling Basin Commission term) includes:
    • on-farm stormwater runoff harvested,
    • any surface water harvested from drainage paths adjacent to farm,
    • any flood or overland flow waters harvested from rivers or creeks running overland once the water “breaks the banks”.
  • Water supplied and lost is apportioned evenly per green hectare.
  • Overlapping crops should be handled independently ie: two different runs each for different time periods and crops even if overlapping. This means the grower must have a reasonable idea of how much water (gross) was supplied to each crop OR use WaterTrack OptimiserTM.
  • WaterTrack RapidTM calculates rainfall runoff based on both the irrigated and dry sections of a field. For example if rain occurs during an irrigation period and the irrigation took say 6 days and the rain occurred on day 3, then 50% of the green area is assumed to have been irrigated & 50% has not. This split is used for calculating the effective rainfall only, the field is treated as one again after.
  • The farm can be treated as one large field for simplicity or run with as many fields treated separately as the grower wishes for more detailed results.
